I am confused at how the geo search works. If I use the bl_all_in_one shortcode it shows the search field for location, but there’s no distance drop-down. So I don’t see how you can filter properly if the user can’t select a distance. For me when I use the all in one no matter what I enter in the location I see all listings in the results.

If I use the filter_form shortcode the distance drop-down shows up, but now there’s no location field. So if I choose 50 miles I don’t know what this means. 50 miles from where? Using this short code no matter what distance I choose I see no listings in the results.

I even tried the sample site I saw in other posts which seems to combine the filter_form shortcode on the left sidebar and the search_form shortcode in the header. Yet again, there is no distance selection available. I try entering San Jose, CA USA in the location and I see 2 listings from Canada.

I don’t know if this is a bug or if I’m missing something. The documentation is extremely vague and limited on how the geo search works. Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, I have properly entered the longitude/latitude for all my listings and they show properly on the map. I just can’t figure out how to filter them based on location and distance using existing shortcodes.

    Hello,

The following demo site uses a combination of Widgets and shortcodes to facilitate the layout demonstrating search and distance features.

    – BeProThemes.com

What you are describing is the freedom to pick your own layout via shortcodes and widgets.

    1) There is a form builder which you can use to test all shortcodes
    2) There are widgets which you can use to test various features
    3) We provide examples and documentation which show the possibilities

Also note that the “bl_all_in_one” shortcode was recommended to you because you noted that you have never seen search features in BePro Listings. People use BePro Listings for a ton of different reasons. Its impossible for us to create one shortcode that does everything for everyone

We suggest testing all of the shortcodes and widgets to see whats possible. If you need help, then consider purchasing an hour of product support our purchase one of the available $1 directory themes

    Also,

If interested in seeing a new shortcode added to BePro Listings which joins the search and distance feature in one component, let us know and we will consider it.

You didn’t answer my question: I have tried all the shortcodes and none of them seem to do a geo search. Some of them have a distance field, but no place to enter originating location. How is this supposed to work? What is the distance referring to (i.e. distance from where)? And the distance seems to have no affect on the search results, so what’s the purpose of this field?

The example site you provided does not have geo search capabilities, which is the purpose of this thread. Do you have an example that shows the geo search capabilities? And is there a shortcode that allows someone to enter their location and search for listings within a certain distance? It doesn’t seem you do. Some short codes have location, others have distance, none have both. Both are required in order to do a geo search.

You refer to the form builder, but that is a premium add-on that costs money. I don’t want to purchase this add-on unless I know it does what I want. Given the short codes that come out of the box seem to be half baked and non-functional regarding geo search, unless you have a working example showing the capabilities I’d be stupid to go purchase any add-ons. If indeed the form builder will do what I want then I’d be happy to purchase it.

    Hello,

Here is an example with search and filter features.

    http://beprothemes.com/vehicles/

When we search “San Jose, CA, USA” on the bycater demo, we get 0 results.

    http://bycater.ca/listings/

However, if the shortcodes seems “half baked” then I would suggest that BePro Listings is not for you. Good luck with your journey

    Also,

Note that all of our demos are on beprothemes.com and a quick search would show multiple options demoing the search and filter features.

In addition, we apologize for referencing the Form Builder earlier as it was a typo. We were referring to the “Shortcode Builder” which is 100% FREE and included in BePro Listings.

OK, I explored a bit more on the sample site and found one demo that successfully uses geo search. But apparently it requires 2 separate shortcodes with 2 separate search buttons, one with location and name (in the header) the other with categories, price ranges and distance (in the sidebar). For others who are confused about this functionality here is the demo site:

Would form builder allow me to create a sidebar widget that provides both the location field and distance on a single sidebar using a single search button?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Glad to hear we clarified the issue.

Your are right, currently you would either need to use 2 shortcodes or a shortcode and a widget. If you would prefer a single shortcode with both features, let us know and we will seriously consider adding it to BePro Listings for FREE.

The Form Builder was incorrectly referenced earlier. It cannot help you with custom shortcodes. Its main focus in on providing custom fields and unlimited forms. You can then separate the submissions on your website by which form captured it, facilitating unlimited directories on one domain.

    Hi,

That’s what I thought about the Form Builder. I think adding the location box to the filter widget/shortcode would be very useful. Even using the separate short code that contains location, once you do your search based on location there is no way to clear it or see that the results are filtered by location. Having a location box above the distance filter could display the location used for filtering so the user can easily see they are filtered by location and clear it if they wish.

Another nice feature that perhaps could be a premium add-on would be to add geo ip detection capabilities so the location (at least postal code) could be detected based on the user’s IP address. This would require integration with a 3rd party geo ip service like http://www.telize.com/ or http://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/geoip2/geolite2/.

    Thanks!
