Banner advertising, not to be confused with affiliate marketing, is a great tool in any website revenue plan. Banners are typically images but can be text based as seen with google ads. However, in this article we will be talking about the image ads since these are the easiest to setup with WordPress.
This is the easiest revenue stream to setup because it depends only on you and your website. Using the WordPress Widget feature, its easy to place an image in your sidebar and attach a referral link to it. The goal being that companies will pay you to place their advertising on your website.
To start, you simply need to tell companies that you are interested in advertising. We will leave it to you to figure out the best and most creative ways to do this. We recommend the following
- Generic ad which links to advertising details
- Page which explains your advertising options and provides a way to contact you
Whichever way you choose to let companies know you are willing to showcase their advertising, the process is simple. Specify ad sizes that you will accept. Depending on your theme, you will have one or more sidebars and hence ad locations you are able to sell. If you are sophisticated enough, you can serve ads as part of your content. There are WordPress advertising plugins that will help you with this.
With this option, you specify the worth of advertising on your blog. You could choose to fill these spaces with advertisers generated from, affiliate networks, agreements you negotiate, or even your own products and services. Ultimately, you decide which ad to put where and ultimately, there is no obligation to use anyone in particular.
So far we have only spoken about the manual route of establishing a banner advertising revenue stream. In reality, you could simply setup a google adsense account and let them serve whatever they consider to be relevant ads to your website. There are countless stories online about people making 10s of thousands of USD’s per month doing this.
Customers like relevant ads. How many products have you purchased this month? We are all consumers in some way and for the most part, we are all open to a deal. Customers, google, and your advertising partners will all be happy if you serve relevant banner ads to your visitors. If your blog focuses on bicycles, you should not expect ads on boating accessories to perform well.
One FindMarijuana.ca we created an advertising page where we laid out the prices for ways customers can advertise on the platform. We offered 2 places on the website for banner advertising.
- The sidebar
- Registration page
We believe that companies coming to our registration page have a different focus to customers reading our blog articles or reading our business listings. So we capitalized on that by creating a second location for advertisers under our registration form. You could consider this a distraction from registration and not try this model. However, in our case, we noticed high traffic to that page without conversions. We found this was one way to monetize that traffic.
If you own a WordPress website that’s getting traffic, then you should seriously consider monetizing that traffic with banner advertising. This is one of the few ways you can make money with your website, without requiring the help of a third party. In fact, if you really wanted, you could make the customer meet you and pay you with cash. That’s a little extreme but you get the point, your website, your rules. From that position, you can then dilute and say its ok, let Google take the wheel or some other platform that will generate the ads and/or advertising relationships for you.
