Regardless of which theme your purchase or download, there are a set of steps that are almost always required. This post aims to cover the general steps involved with setting up a theme. We will walk you through the options from installation through to configuration.
INSTALLING THE THEME
It all starts with installing the theme via the Appearance->Themes menu. The initial page shows themes already installed. It also provides a button for adding new themes. You can download free themes from wordpress.org or upload themes you purchased
Once the theme is uploaded, you still need to activate it. Only when activated will the theme show up on the front end. Note that you are able to preview how a theme will look on your website before actually activating it. If any issues arise during activation, simple return to a previously working theme.
EXAMPLE THEME SETUP
This example covers the installation of our ByCater theme. It supports our BePro Lisitngs directory plugin and provides templates specifically for that plugin.
CONFIGURING YOUR THEME
Once a theme is installed, there are a few steps that are almost always needed before you can consider the setup complete. These steps include
- Create a home page and set it’s template to one of the options offered. Usually “Home” is an option
- Set the home page as a static front page in the admin on the page Settings->Reading
- Create a menu and set it as primary. May be named something else (e.g. main, top, etc), so examine options
- Update your logo
Apart from these, there are obvious steps like removing any demo data and removing any “created by” links (especially in the footer). These steps will help you to get your theme to a usable state
Some themes don’t have nice template files, they may require you to use shortcodes to implement their various features. In such cases, you may need to examine the available documentation, to confirm how to formulate the layouts that your website needs.
Also note that most themes depend on external plugins to facilitate their features. If these features are built into the theme, then you are waiting on the theme maker to update their theme and the packaged plugins. If you use a theme from wordpress.org or the ones sold here on BeProSoftware.com, the plugins are separate, allowing you to update them independently
Setting up a theme on the wordpress cms ranges in complexity depending on the theme. However, there are certain steps that are required no matter how complex or simple a theme is. Once these steps are completed, you should have a theme that’s ready for the addition of your custom information
